Strange Attraction (2 - 3)

What has perfect glass, cool teleporters and amazing gameplay? The answer is Hot Cakes’ new map Strange Attraction.

Hot Cakes has designed this map specifically for 1on1 play, but it rocks just as well in 3 player FFAs. The map consists of two main atriums and one smaller ‘room’ containing the lightning gun, all connected by a series of corridors and a pair of the best looking teleporters I have ever seen, they even have little bits that come down from the ceiling as you approach. The first atrium is a series of walkways running around the edge of a small room carved out of the rock. Corridors then run off of this room into the second atrium or to one of the two teleporters. The exit to the ground floor teleporter also leads through a winding tunnel, which reminds me of an abandoned mine, into the lightning gun room. This room then exits via a lift, bringing you out right next to the yellow armour in the second atrium.

At this point I would direct your gaze to the two windows in front of you. These are the best examples of glass in Quake that I have seen, they don’t ‘bleed’ like windows used previously in Quake maps. Having emailed Hot Cakes about this I am impressed by the amount of work he has put in to this map just to improve a little detail like this. Moving forward and to your right is the Mega Health sitting in the only water in the map. This makes sound that little bit more important in the level, if you here a splash then you know your opponent has just got the Mega Health, but they are left vulnerable at the bottom of one of the atriums.

The items are very well set out, with weapons placed where they will be useful. So the grenade launcher is placed high up where you can use it to rain death on your opponents and the super nailgun is placed on a balcony just above the second atrium. A rocket launcher is placed in each atrium so it is fairly easy to get hold of one. Armour is nicely placed with two green armours, one yellow armour and one red armour placed in strategic positions. The best placement though is saved for the lightning gun, it is placed in a small outdoor area away from the main atriums. Once you get the gun you can leave by a lift that leaves you right by the yellow armour and back into the fray. If you hear a lift and then someone picking up armour then beware.

The texturing is done in a nice base mixed with rock style, finished off with blue lights. The glass observation area really gave me the feel of a base set into the side of a cliff. I imagine it as a scientific research facility left to waste. Special mention must go to both the computer screens with their displays full of static, and the strange blue liquid that is seen everywhere, this added to the feel of an abandoned research area, as if some strange radioactive material had started to leak.

The lighting on this map is very good with some nice shadows being cast in the indoor areas and the outdoor areas well lit in contrast. Overall this map plays well in either 1on1 or 3 – 4 player FFAs. Definitely one to keep for a long time. A good four and a half, congratulations to Hot Cakes.

Grind I don't know what map you played, but this map truly sucked. First of all, there were 'jaggies' caused by Qoole. Not to mention 1v1 plays like shit. FFA is not that good and the rocks look terrible. The textures really didn't do it for me. There wasn't enough detail, especially noticable near one of the teleporters. Decent layout and flow, but otherwise flawed.
