KHDM1 - Blue Aura
2-3 players | Reviewed by Fat Controller - Sunday 4th November 2001 @ 3:34pm
This is a tiny squarish three-level single atrium decked out in IKBlue. Three teleports and a ramp let you go up in the world, with well-sourced lighting.
The minimal weapons load - one central rocket launcher and one Perforator, along with one yellow jacket - plays unpleasantly: if you don't get the RL right away you will die virtually instantly. Over and over again. I won't say I was weeping with frustration, but I came very close.
Frankly, the map feels a bit understocked, and could have done with more health about the place (there only seems to be one health box), and could have done with being double the size as well. It's still well-built though and hopefully Kenth will produce some better maps in the future.

What does SP stand for?
(I still think the texture set sucks). Anyway, people shouldn't rely on textures to make maps look awesome, crazy and totally sweet; they should employ a badass build style instead. Both maps I've seen it in (I know not of this 'homecoming', but I'm sure it blows) use crap flat walls, flat floors, flat ceilings and generally make no attempt to look sweet or awesome. If anyone out there wants to build something badass to prove me wrong go ahead.

...certainly does not blow.
The texture set was made by Fingers; the creater of the famous IKbase set. They were first put out back in 1997 with his set of maps ikspq2-4. Those are known as a truly classic series, have impressive and original architecture, good lighting, arcane theme and solid gameplay. Homecoming was the last of the three, and without a doubt the most popular.
Ikspq5 - "The Secret Installation" soon went on to follow, as a stunning debut for the IKBase textures, with architecture that still uber-rocks even by today's standards.
I've made a nice little gallery for you here -> http://www.planetquake.com/xenon/img/ikq
I recommend you get them just to check out the architecture, even if you don't like singleplayer gameplay. Grab here: http://ftp.gamers.org/pub/idgames2/levels/g-i/
And yeah, it is a shame no maps have made very good use of the set... Jimbo's "Cobalt Cathexis" had some nice architecture but looked pretty bland.

#15. SP... ^

btw, after DranzDM7 I'm gonna make an SP.
yeah, I remember ikspq5, loved it. I'll go dl homecoming as per your advice.
I'm thinking of either a gothic castle theme or a concrete base design for my SP, what d'ya think?

Wtf has that got to do this blue base texture set? Homecoming is made of blue rock and brick.
Bejesus man, this proves nothing. Blue base really does blow now.
btw, yeah, great architechture in Homecoming. just realised I have all those maps, I just haven't played them for years.

Blue base? Are you completely confusing this set with the RAPDM3 (see pending list) set?
This is the same one. Iirc the homecoming ones were tweaked a little, but the other two ikspq blue maps used exactly the same set. bleughrtsafsdfa
And it's great to hear you'll be making an SP; how about the Zerstorer-map1 theme? :P
Seriously though, I'd recommend gothicy-medieval. It brings out Quake's strong points more, needs far less detail to look just as good, and is one helluva lot easier to light (torches/dark shadows). I'm imagining dranzdm6 with larger rooms and impressive setpieces...
